The following Fig. shows an example of an electrolysis process: The complete recovery of a spent acid pickling bath may be performed by treatment of the spent acid in a cathode compartment. Anions are removed over an anion exchange membrane to produce a pure acid. On the cathode, hydrogen is formed as excessive acid is present. If the acid has been removed, pure metal is recovered.
